Collection: Tracer Units

About the different types of Tracer Units

As mentioned in other parts of this website, a muzzle device for airsoft such as a flash hider or compensator or barrel extension typically does not add any function and is purely a cosmetic item. A form of muzzle device in airsoft that is the exception and does add a touch of function is the tracer units. Tracer units will often take on the outward appearance of a mock suppressor (also known as a barrel extension), however its function is to light up your shots as the BB is traveling to its target. Players at indoor arenas often enjoy them as a way to enhance their experience or track their shots in low light situations.

Using special glow in the dark tracer BBs, the tracer unit has a sensor that picks up when a BB is traveling through. As a BB is traveling through the tracer unit, a light emitting diode (LED) inside will flash and activate the glow in the dark tracer BB. You would then be able to see your shot as it flies in low or no light situations. In full automatic mode of firing, so many shots are being activated that it often looks like a steady stream or laser beam coming out as the rounds are being fired. The tracer unit is battery powered and self contained within the body. Depending on the maker and model, it may use replaceable batteries or house a rechargeable battery inside.

Q & A:
Q: What is a tracer BB?
A: A tracer BB is a special type of ammo for your airsoft gun. It can be fired through any airsoft gun the same way regular BBs are, however they are made of special materials that are reactive to light and give the appearance of glowing in the dark. Any airsoft gun with a compatible thread pitch at the end of the barrel can attach a tracer unit. Standard BBs will not light up and will not be activated by the tracer unit. Extended inner barrel setups will not function with tracer units.

Q: What tracer unit will fit my airsoft gun?
A: There are thousands of models of airsoft guns, it is hard to know the specifications for every airsoft gun on the market. If you purchase your airsoft gun from us or a model that we offer, we should have this information available. Most tracer units will use 14mm CCW (-14mm aka counter clockwise) threading. If your gun does not have this thread there are adapaters to make them work.

Q: Is it illegal to remove my orange tip?
A: Airsoft guns by federal law are imported into the country with a permanently affixed blaze orange tip. Removing or tampering with the orange tip after the purchase of the airsoft gun is not illegal in many places but it is best to check the legality of doing this locally. Keep in mind that with or without an orange tip, airsoft guns do take on a realistic appearance and it is best to be responsible and make sure you only have it out at a sanctioned airsoft field or proper place to play and not in public.

Q: If I remove my tip, can I return my airsoft gun?
A: The moment the orange tip is tampered with or removed within the warranty period, that airsoft gun is considered non returnable so be sure you are happy with the product before you start modifying it. There will be no exceptions.

Q: How do I remove the orange tip?
A: The plastic orange tip on airsoft guns with threaded barrels are permanently affixed to prevent tampering. Once you own your airsoft gun you can do what you want with it if it is legal. That said, the tips are usually affixed with a very strong adhesive and is often pinned in place. Forcefully removing the orange flash hider without the proper tools, understanding, and preparation could result in damage to the threads, which would prevent you from mounting anything after that. Do so at your own risk.
